Inspired by QuickSilver for Mac OS X, Katapult is an application launcher for KDE designed to allow faster access to applications, bookmarks, and other items. It is plugin-based, so it can launch anything that is has a plugin for. Its display is driven by plugins as well, so its appearance is completely customizable. It was inspired by Quicksilver for OS X.

Byzanz is a free opensource GNOME based Command-Line utility to capture desktop recording software for linux. This should probably be the coolest command-line utility that I have seen in recent days. Byzanz records your desktop session to an animated GIF. You can record your entire screen, a single window, an arbitrary region or even follow the cursor. Given that it is only a GIF format makes it even more an interesting proposition as the file size is going to be very small.

Tomboy is a desktop note-taking application for Linux and Unix. Simple and easy to use, but with potential to help you organize the ideas and information you deal with every day. Tomboy is written in C# and utilizes the Mono runtime and Gtk#. Automatic spell-checking is provided by GtkSpell.

youtube-dl is a small free opensource command-line program to download videos from YouTube.com. youtube-dl is a platform independent tool that works on UNIX, Linux, Mac OSX and Windows. The latest version of Youtube-dl is 2008.08.09 and requires the Python interpreter, version 2.4 or later.

Install configure and use LXDE desktop environment in openSUSE. LXDE is a new project aimed to provide a new desktop environment which is lightweight and fast. It’s not designed to be powerful and bloated, but to be usable and slim enough, and keep the resource usage low. Different from other desktop environments, LXDE doesn’t tightly integrate every component. Instead, LXDE makes all components independent, and each of them can be used independently with few dependencies.

Cairo-Dock is a simple but effective feature rich dock for your openSUSE Linux. Ever since, Fabounet proposed a version improved, with a very ergonomic configuration newer versions are followed at an intensive pace and with their new functionalities like the sub-docks, the effects on the launchers … Many people were grafted with the project, each one bringing its competences, of graphics, to the applet or plugins and development.

Screenlets are small owner-drawn applications (written in Python) that can be described as “the virtual representation of things lying/standing around on your desk”. Sticknotes, clocks, rulers, youtube, gmail and more. Screenlets are free opensource software released under GPL License. Screenlets use GTK2 & Cairo for drawing and windowing.
